12 shocking numbers to know from the 2026 DI baseball tournament regionals

Oklahoma WALKS OFF No. 2 overall seed Georgia Tech to win regional

The regional round for the 2026 DI baseball tournament has finally concluded with 16 teams still standing and three-fourths of the field packing their bags.

There wasn't a moment of relaxation throughout the four days. Games starting just as others ended, extra-inning marathons took place hours past most fans' bedtimes, wins and losses that left everyone speechless, the list goes on and on.

To recap it all, here are 12 of the most shocking statistics from the jam-packed weekend to put it into perspective how historic it was.

0 - teams from the 2025 MCWS field in regionals

There’s no bigger storyline coming out of the regionals round than the top two national seeds being eliminated for the second straight season — No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Georgia Tech in 2026 and No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Texas in 2025.

But an underlying statistic that might pack an even bigger punch (felt ever heavier across) across the two campaigns is that zero teams from the 2025 Men’s College World Series field are still playing.

Four teams, including the reigning national champions in LSU, didn’t make the tournament. Arkansas, Coastal Carolina, Oregon State and the Bruins were all eliminated on Sunday.

It is the first time that the entire MCWS field from the previous year didn't make it past the regionals.

2 - Four seeds that reached the super regionals

St. John's baseball

There was arguably no bigger winner of the regional round than the four seeds, with two breaking through to the super regionals in Little Rock and St. John’s.

It’s the first time in NCAA baseball tournament history that two four-seeds have reached the second weekend.

Both teams went 3-0, putting the college baseball world on notice on Friday by stunning their respective one seeds and regional hosts — No. 9 Southern Miss for Little Rock and No. 10 Florida State for St. John’s.

The Trojans went on to beat three-seed Jacksonville State in consecutive contests, while the Red Storm battled through inclement weather to down Northern Illinois and FSU again in the final.

4 - Players to record three homer games on Friday

A win or loss in Game 1 of regionals sets the tone for most teams’ outlook on the weekend.  It determines whether they’ll need four victories while staving off elimination, or two just twins to get the job done.

Four players helped their teams in major ways on Friday secure that first-round win, hitting three home runs in a single: Texas’ Anthony Pack Jr., Georgia Tech’s Alex Hernandez, UCF’s Andrew Williamson and Cincinnati’s Jack Natili.

Pack, the 2026 SEC Freshman of the Year, completed the feat in his first three at-bats that came in the first five innings of his game against Holy Cross. He’s the first player in Longhorns history to achieve the milestone in a single postseason game.

Williamson became the eighth player in Golden Knights’ history to accomplish the feat, hitting all three against NC State before play was suspended for the night due to inclement weather. Hernandez’s performance was a part of the Yellow Jackets’ 22-5 drubbing over UIC.

It was the third time this season that Natili has belted three home runs in a game, accounting for three of the Bearcats’ six homers in the blowout win over Louisiana.

6 - Ejections

Regionals always breed incredibly intense atmospheres in the NCAA tournament for a multitude of reasons, from seasons being on the line to four fan bases all trying to fit in one stadium. It sucks the air out of each ballpark hosting.

Tensions ran so high that six players/coaches were ejected from three different games this year, hailing from the Athens, Hattiesburg and Lincoln Regionals.

Virginia made up the bulk of the group, with coach Chris Pollard getting ejected in the Cavaliers’ regional opener against Jacksonville State and players John Paone and Kyle Johnson were tossed versus No. 9 Southern Miss.

Arizona State’s Landon Hairston was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct versus No. 13 Nebraska. The Big 12 Player of the Year flipped his bat in the air following his fourth-inning strikeout.

No. 3 Georgia’s Tre Phelps was also thrown out for unsportsmanlike conduct during his go-ahead two-run blast in the regional final against Liberty. Trotting down first base, the junior seemed to have words for the Flames dugout and first baseman Jaxon Sorenson, but Phelps later posted on his Instagram story that he was “tossed for acknowledging family.” It was reported that Phelps’ family was in the stands just above the Liberty dugout, hence the gesture.

Coach Wes Johnson was ejected moments later for arguing his player’s ejection.

Phelps will miss the first game of UGA’s super regional against No. 14 Mississippi State due to player ejections resulting in one-game suspensions.

7 - Walk-off wins

West Virginia

Nine regional games were decided in extra innings, with two of them lasting until the 14th inning.

Even crazier? Six of them ended in exhilarating walk-off fashion, five of them ending the losing team’s season. Ole Miss walked off Arizona State twice, just two days apart — first in the regional opener and then again in the regional final.

No. 1UCLA came back to beat Virginia Tech through an improbable three-run ninth, but was given a taste of its own medicine a day later, getting walked off by Saint Mary’s. Oklahoma and No. 16 West Virginia bid adieu to No. 2 Georgia Tech and Kentucky, respectively, in Game 7 each’s regional final.

The seventh walk-off was the first of the weekend by Florida star Brendan Lawson. Tied 7-7 against Rider, the sophomore sent the Gators to the winner’s bracket with a solo home run to straightaway center.

9 - Rain delays in Auburn Regional

The Southeast experienced inclement weather throughout the weekend, delaying games till the night time and suspended some till the next day.

The Auburn Regional received the worst luck with games getting delayed nine times over the course of four days. That includes start times getting pushed back, stopped or postponed till the next day.

Three games were on Saturday, forcing NC State to play back-to-back contests and UCF to play twice. Auburn, which played in five of the seven games at Plainsman Park, endured six delays.

26 - Runs Troy scored in two games to beat No. 8 Florida

Troy baseball

The Trojans faced a tall task entering Sunday afternoon, needing to win consecutive games against No. 8 Florida to advance to their first-ever super regional.

But Troy made the improbable look easy, putting on an offensive clinic and scoring 26 runs combined to eliminate the Gators.

It was an offensive overload in Game 1, beating UF 16-11 thanks to a nine-run sixth inning that featured 11 base runners. The winner-take-all meeting featured another high-scoring sixth, putting five runs across and three more in the eighth to win 10-2.

The Trojans scored 50 runs in their final four regional games after losing their opening contest to Miami 10-5.

55 - Runs Southern California scored after regional opening loss

The strongest part of Southern Cal’s team this season has been its pitching staff, spearheaded by left-handed bell cow Mason Edwards, the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, who’s held a sub-two ERA all year.

The pitching staff entered the tournament with a 3.46 ERA, posting the most shutouts (10) and hits allowed through nine innings (6.98) in the nation.

But it wasn’t this bunch that did the legwork to reach the super regionals; it was the offense.

After losing its regional opener to Texas State, the lineup exploded for 55 runs through four contests. They beat Lamar 19-6, avenged their loss to the Bobcats with a 15-4 victory, and handled No. 12 Texas A&M twice, 14-3 and 7-1.

It was the most runs scored by any team in the regionals.

78 - Straight games that UCLA won leading in the eighth before Sunday's loss

There hasn’t been a more fitting nickname for No. 1 UCLA throughout the 2026 season than ‘comeback kids,’ leading the country in come-from-behind wins with 30.

But on the other side of the coin, the Bruins have also been one of the toughest teams to beat whenever they are in the driver’s seat late. They had won their last 78 games when in front in the eighth inning or later entering the tournament.

That streak was snapped on Sunday, getting walked off by four-seed Saint Mary’s in extra innings.

UCLA held a 5-4 lead into the ninth, but gave up a run on an RBI single to Ian Armstrong, sending the game to the 10th. Building on their momentum, the Gaels walked it off an inning later on Makoa Sniffen’s single to score Cody Kashimoto.

454 — Feet of Oklahoma’s Dayton Tockey’s walk-off home run

Dayton Tockey’s walk-off home run over No. 2 Georgia Tech wasn’t the far-biggest fly of the weekend, let alone the Atlanta Regional, but it was the most emphatic.

The Sooners trailed in both regional final contests to the Yellow Jackets, a team that steamrolled by UIC 22-5 on Friday.

Somehow, they mounted a large comeback on Sunday to force a Game 7, and after Oklahoma tied it in the ninth of a winner-take-all affair, Tockey’s homer silenced Mac Nease, Baseball Park.

It happened on a full count. Sooners players poured out of the dugout immediately to celebrate the walk-off before Tockey could even make it halfway down the first base line.

507 - minutes played between Arizona State and Ole Miss

Ole Miss baseball

Extra-inning games flooded the regional weekend — all four days had at least two contests go past regulation.

Ole Miss and Arizona State made up a fourth of these, experiencing a 14-inning marathon in their regional opener and a 10-inning thriller in the regional final, both decided by walk-offs.

The two games combined took 507 minutes, both trekking deep into the night.

The Rebels’ Brayden Randle hit a walk-off single through the right side to win the first one, lifting Ole Miss to the winner’s bracket. The Sun Devils got their rematch three games later on Sunday, but couldn’t avenge their loss after Dom Decker walked it off to advance the Rebels to the super regionals.

.409 — Milwaukee's regular-season record

The Panthers weren’t able to become the third four-seed to reach the super regionals, falling twice to No. 4 Auburn in the regional final after starting the weekend 2-0.

But it doesn’t diminish how historic their season was, especially considering their regular-season record.

Milwaukee finished the regular season 22-31 before sweeping the Horizon League tournament and beating No. 4 Auburn and two-seed UCF consecutively. Even crazier, they were 15-27 at the start of May.
