Mayfield beat out fellow finalists Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson (last year's winner) and Stanford running back Bryce Love. The Oklahoma quarterback was a Heisman Trophy finalist and finished third in the voting last season and he finished fourth in 2015, but he caps off his college career as the sport's most outstanding player after an impressive senior season.

He completed 71 percent of his passes for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions, while leading the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship, 12-1 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Each of those passing statistics were a career-best, despite Oklahoma's significant roster attrition of key skill players from last season.

He threw multiple touchdown passes in every game this season, including a five-touchdown, 598-yard performance against Oklahoma State in the Bedlam game and four passing touchdowns against TCU in the Big 12 Championship.

He is the sixth Oklahoma player to win the Heisman, joining quarterback Sam Bradford (2008), quarterback Jason White (2003), running back Billy Sims (1978), running back Steve Ownes (1969) and running back Billy Vessels (1952).

Mayfield began his career as a walk-on at Texas Tech, where he played in eight games as a true freshman before transferring to Oklahoma.
