๐ Friday night recap
Saturday has plenty of great action in store for us in Week 9, with three ranked SEC matchups and lots of playoff implications throughout the day.
But first, let's take a look back at the action from Friday night's games.
๐ฎโ๐จ Virginia Tech outlasts Cal in double OT
Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones had five touchdownsโthree passing, two rushingโin a shootout against the 5-2 Golden Bears. The Hokies trailed 20-10 at halftime, but rallied in the second half to take a 27-20 lead. A late touchdown from Cal tied it, then BOTH teams missed game-winning field goals in the final minutes, taking us to overtime. The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime before Virginia Tech won it in double OT, 42-34.

The Mean Green continue to pile up the points, beating Charlotte, 54-20, behind a record-breaking performance by redshirt freshman QB Drew Mestemaker. Mestemaker threw for a school and American conference-record 608 yards. He completed 37 of 49 passes with four touchdowns and became the first FBS played since 2020 to throw for more than 600 yards.

๐ฅ Boise State rolls over Nevada
The Broncos rallied for 24 unanswered points to beat Nevada, 24-3, and extend their win streak to three-straight games. Boise State capitalized on Nevada's mistakes, converting a muffed punt to a TD, recovering two fumbles and recording three interceptions in the win. Jeremiah Earby had two interceptions, including one in the endzone in a standout defensive performance. The Broncos improve to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in Mountain West play as they become bowl-eligible for the 28th consecutive season, the second longest active streak in the nation.

๐ค Predicting the 9 conference champions
The conference championships picture is getting clearer by the week. Our own Stan Becton outlined his predictions as to which programs are going to take home their conference's trophy this season.
Here are his Power Four predictions:
ACC โ Virginia
The ACC still has three teams undefeated in conference play โ Georgia Tech, Virginia and SMU. However, none of the three play each other head-to-head. If the trajectory remains, two of these teams will meet in the conference championship game with Miami on the outside looking in.
Becton predicts it will be Tech and UVA, with the Cavaliers prevailing against a week Yellow Jackets rush defense.
Big 12 โ Texas Tech
The Big 12 is wide open with three one-loss teams and two undefeated in conference play. BYU and Cincinnati sit on top of the standings right now, but each has a much tougher remaining schedule than Texas Tech and Arizona State. Becton predicts the road will be too tough for the top two right now, and the Sun Devils and Red Raiders will meet in the title game with Texas Tech coming out on top.
Big Ten โ Ohio State
Becton believes Ohio State is the runaway favorite to be the Big Ten champion, and for good reason. The Buckeyes own a suffocating defense headlined by linebacker duo Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles in the middle and All American safety Caleb Downs at the top. The offense has picked up steam as of late, and it would be hard to pick against the reigning national champions in a weak Big Ten.
SEC โ Alabama
Alabama has hit its stride since a Week 1 loss to a now floundering Florida State team. Kalen DeBoer's offense is the best if not one of the best in the SEC, and the Tide does not face another top offense the rest of the season. Ty Simpson should be able to out-score the rest of the sub-par offenses on Bama's schedule as the Tide roll into the SEC championship undefeated in conference play. They of course have some competition in Texas A&M and other one-loss conference foes, but right now, Alabama is the team to beat.

๐ Tracking the undefeated
Through Week 8, just six teams can still chase an undefeated season. Five of the six are in action this Saturday, with Ohio State on a bye before a matchup with Penn State on Nov. 1.
Here are the five matchups undefeated teams to watch this weekend:
*Undefeated teams are in bold
- No. 7 Georgia Tech vs. Syracuse, 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25
- The Yellow Jackets have had some hiccups en route to a 7-0 start, but Brent Key's squad has found ways to win close games down the stretch. Tech has four unranked ACC games remaining before a potential top-10 matchup with Georgia at the end of the season.
- No. 2 Indiana vs. UCLA , 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25
- The Hoosiers are in complete control of their postseason aspirations without a ranked team left on their schedule. Curt Cignetti's squad looks to be on a collision course with Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, with the winner in a prime position to earn a bye in the College Football Playoff.
- No. 11 BYU vs. Iowa State, 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25
- The Cougars are off to back-to-back 7-0 starts for the first time in program history. They have been tested the past two weeks, squeezing by Arizona and Utah by just one score. But BYU's tough stretch continues in the Big 12 with a road trip against the Cyclones and No. 14 Texas Tech in Week 10.
- Navy vs. FAU, 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25
- The Midshipmen host FAU before their toughest stretch of the season against North Texas, No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 18 South Florida. Navy will undeniably be tested, but if it can make it through, the Midshipmen will be contending for a CFP spot.
- No. 3 Texas A&M at No. 20 LSU, 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25
- The Aggies snuck past the Razorbacks last weekend, 45-42, and they will not get a break this weekend in Baton Rouge. LSU has not met its preseason expectations this season, but it is still a talented team and Death Valley at night is one of the most formidable atmospheres in the country. However, a win this weekend would provide a huge cushion for TAMU's postseason hopes, still set to match up with Missouri and Texas later this season.
๐ GameDay headed to Nashville
For just the second time in program history, the College GameDay crew is headed to Nashville as No. 10 Vanderbilt hosts No. 15 Missouri. The Commodores previously hosted GameDay in 2008 in matchup with Auburn.
The Commodores planted themselves back on college football's radar last season with a win over No. 1 Alabama, but Vandy sputtered down the stretch, losing four of their last five. This team is just two years removed from going 2-10, including 0-8 in the SEC, but Clark Lea has completely turned around what people think about Vanderbilt football.
Much of this credit can be given toward graduate quarterback Diego Pavia, who has brought a certain persona to a program that has been depleted of star power for years. The New Mexico transfer has already eclipsed 2,000 total yards with 19 total touchdowns.
But the Vanderbilt defense will have its hands full against one of the top backs in the nation in Ahmad Hardy. The sophomore has had back-to-back down weeks against Auburn and Alabama, combining for just 110 rushing yards in that span. But he is always a threat for a big play with 840 yards and 11 touchdowns to his name.
A win for either team puts the College Football Playoff well in sight down the final stretch of the season. And while a loss doesn't eliminate either team sitting at 6-1, postseason aspirations certainly get more blurry.

๐Risers
After upsetting former-No. 10 LSU in Nashville, the Vanderbilt Commodores are in the top 10 for just the third time in program history. The first came in 1937, one year after the AP poll was created, and the second time, in 1947. Texas A&M breaches the top three after a win over Arkansas โ the Aggies' highest rank since 1995.
The Bulldogs are back in the top five after Georgia took down former-No. 5 Ole Miss. Over in the ACC, Georgia Tech matches its highest rank of the century, jumping five spots to No. 7, and Louisville makes a loud entrance, from unranked to No. 19 after taking down then-No. 2 Miami.
๐Fallers
No. 20 LSU earns the biggest drop of the week inside the poll, falling 10 spots after its loss in Nashville. No. 9 Miami and No. 14 Texas Tech each dropped seven spots after losses to unranked conference opponents. But both teams that took down these previously undefeated opponents were welcomed into the rankings in Week 9.
