Breaking down Penn State wrestling's DI-record 77 consecutive dual wins

Drew Hildebrandt, Aaron Brooks and Max Dean all earn wins over Rutgers student-athletes who either previously earned All-American honors or would finish on the podium during their time at Rutgers. Hildebrandt beat Dylan Shawver 4-2 at 125 pounds, Brooks topped John Poznanski 10-2 at 184 pounds and Dean beat Greg Bulsak 9-6 at 197 pounds.

23. Jan. 21, 2022: Penn State vs. Michigan, 29-6

In the lone No. 1 vs. No. 2 match of the dual, Penn State's Aaron Brooks topped Myles Amine 3-1. This win would give Brooks the No. 1 seed at Big Tens, and though he would drop to Amine in that tournament, Brooks would rally back to win his second of four NCAA titles.

24. Jan. 23, 2022: Penn State vs. Michigan State, 28-9

Penn State and Michigan State split the two weights with two ranked wrestlers, with then-No. 1 Aaron Brooks beating No. 27 Layne Malczewski of Michigan State 4-0 and Michigan State's then-No. 15 Cam Caffey topping Penn State's then-No. 2 Max Dean 3-2. ;

27. Feb. 6, 2022: Penn State vs. Nebraska, 21-13

This win secured Penn State's Big Ten regular season title for 2022 and featured a 2016 Indiana State Championship rematch between Penn State's then-No. 1 Nick Lee and Nebraska's then-No. 8 Chad Red. Lee won the bout 4-1 and would finish his career 4-0 against Red.

Penn State earned bonus points in eight of 10 weights, with the two exceptions being 165 and 141 pounds.

29. Nov. 11, 2022: Penn State vs. Lock Haven, 44-3

Gary Steen, Alex Facundo and Shayne Van Ness made their Penn State dual debuts in this matchup. Facundo and Van Ness both earned wins, while Steen dropped to All-American Anthony Noto. Steen and Facundo would both transfer to Oklahoma State a little under three years later.

31. Dec. 4, 2022: Penn State vs. Lehigh, 24-12

The 197-pound bout in this dual featured a matchup between a current and a former All-American Nittany Lion. Michael Beard, who earned All-American honors for Penn State in 2021, wrestled as a backup to Penn State's Max Dean in 2022 while Dean went on to win NCAAs. Beard then transferred to Lehigh following the 2022 season and beat Dean 11-9 in their first varsity match against one another.

32. Dec. 11, 2022: Penn State vs. Oregon State, 31-3

Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci and Greg Kerkvliet put up a combined 49 points against their Beaver foes. Kerkvliet led the way with an 18-2 tech fall over J.J. 35. Dec. 20, 2022: Penn State vs. Iowa State, 22-12

This is the only time Penn State faced Iowa State, head coach Cael Sanderson's alma mater, in this current streak of 77 wins. The Nittany Lions handled the Cyclones, winning six of 10 weights. The most notable result came at 197 pounds, as Iowa State's Marcus Coleman delivered Penn State's Aaron Brooks the second and final dual loss of his career 9-7.

36. Jan. 6, 2023: Penn State vs. Wisconsin, 28-12

This matchup marked Matt Lee's varsity dual debut as a Nittany Lion. He dropped a tough 18-6 major to Dean Hamiti in the bout. Hamiti would go on to win an NCAA title in 2025 at 174 pounds for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

37. Jan. 20, 2023: Penn State vs. Michigan, 30-8

This dual marked Alex Facundo's first win over an All-American as a Nittany Lion. He beat Michigan's Cameron Amine 6-5 on riding time criteria in tie-breakers. Amine and Facundo would both ultimately transfer to Oklahoma State.

38. Jan. 22, 2023: Penn State vs. Michigan State, 34-6

Max Dean picked up his second career win over Cameron Caffey 4-0 in this bout. Caffey beat Dean the previous year in the dual and is one of just three wrestlers, including Michael Beard and Ethan Laird, to earn dual wins over Dean during his career with the Nittany Lions. He's the only one of those three that Dean wrestled more than once at Penn State. Dean finished his tenure with the Nittany Lions 2-1 against Caffey after also beating him in the 2022 Big Ten tournament.

39. Jan. 27, 2023: Penn State vs. Iowa, 23-14

Penn State gave up just two takedowns across 10 weights against this stacked Hawkeye squad. Iowa's Real Woods earned a takedown in his 4-1 win over Penn State's Beau Bartlett, and Iowa's Max Murin beat Penn State's Shayne Van Ness in the same 4-1 fashion up one weight class. The Nittany Lions, meanwhile, earned 16 takedowns as a team and racked up bonus points at 133 pounds and 184 pounds.

40. Feb. 3, 2023: Penn State vs. Ohio State, 29-9

Penn State's Roman Bravo-Young's 8-2 win over Ohio State's now two-time NCAA champion Jesse Mendez is the second-most points the Buckeye has given up in a loss thus far in his collegiate career (he gave up nine to Brock Hardy at the 2025 Big Ten Championships). Mendez was one of eight athletes on that 2023 Buckeye team who either had, or would go on to, earn All-American honors. Penn State beat seven of them in this dual, with the lone exception being Sammy Sasso, who topped Penn State's Shayne Van Ness 6-3.

41. Feb. 5, 2023: Penn State vs. Indiana, 35-8

Every Penn State athlete who would go on to start for the Nittany Lions in the postseason earned a win against the Hoosiers, led by Beau Bartlett and Max Dean's pins at 141 and 197 pounds against Joey Showalter and Drayton Harris.

42. Feb. 10, 2023: Penn State vs. Rutgers, 33-8

Of the eight weights that Penn State won against the Scarlet Knights, the Nittany Lions earned bonus points in seven of them, including two tech falls from Greg Kerkvliet and Aaron Brooks and major decision wins from Beau Bartlett, Shayne Van Ness, Alex Facundo, Carter Starocci and Max Dean.

43. Feb. 12, 2023: Penn State vs. Maryland, 44-3

Maryland's only win came at 125 pounds from Braxton Brown, who would ultimately move up the following year and wrestle at 133 pounds for the Terps. He beat Gary Steen of Penn State 1-0.

44. Feb. 19, 2023: Penn State vs. Clarion, 40-6

Penn State won nine of 10 bouts against Clarion, with the team's lone loss coming by fall at 184 pounds when All-American Will Feldkamp topped Penn State backup Donovon Ball. Penn State picked up pins of its own at 133 pounds and 285 pounds, however, from Roman Bravo-Young and Greg Kerkvliet, two NCAA champs.

45. Dec. 3, 2023: Penn State vs. Lehigh, 30-10

Transfers Aaron Nagao, Mitchell Mesenbrink and Bernie Truax all made their Rec Hall debuts against the Mountain Hawks. Mesenbrink and Truax earned wins by technical fall over Jake Logan and Jack Wilt, respectively, while Nagao dropped to eventual All-American Ryan Crookham 6-4.

46. Dec. 10, 2023: Penn State vs. Hofstra, 43-10

Penn State wrestled without All-Americans Beau Bartlett, Shayne Van Ness and Greg Kerkvliet in the lineup but still dominated the Pride. Penn State backup David Evans (who has since transferred to Utah Valley) teched Alex Turley at 141 pounds in place of Barlett, while the seven other Nittany Lions starters at 125, 133 and 157-197 pounds also all notched bonus points. Levi Haines, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Bernie Truax and Aaron Brooks' bonus points came via pins.

47. Jan. 5, 2024: Penn State vs. Oregon, 36-3

Penn State helped the Beavers set an attendance record in Corvallis, drawing 8,540 people to Gill Coliseum. The win also marked Penn State freshman Braeden Davis' first varsity win over an All-American, as he beat Oregon State's Brandon Kaylor 11-6.

48. Jan. 14, 2024: Penn State vs. Indiana, 46-0

Penn State did not give up a single takedown in this shutout of the Hoosiers, outscoring the Hoosiers on takedowns 35-0. This win also marked Penn State's first Big Ten shutout since beating Maryland 46-0 on Jan. 7, 2022 (see No. 20 on this list).

49. Jan. 19, 2024: Penn State vs. Michigan, 27-9

Penn State drew 11 stall calls against the Wolverines in this dual, winning eight of 10 matches by a combined score of 64-21.

50. Jan. 21: Penn State vs. Michigan State, 35-0

This dual marked Penn State's second shutout in one week after beating the Hoosiers 46-0 on Jan. 14 (No. 48 on this list). Penn State backups David Evans and Lucas Cochran earned wins at 149 and 285 pounds by decision, while All-American Aaron Nagao, future NCAA champion Mitchell Mesenbrink and then three-time NCAA champion Aaron Brooks added bonus points via a tech fall, a major decision and another tech fall at 133, 165 pounds and 197 pounds. Braeden Davis, Beau Bartlett, Levi Haines, Terrell Barraclough and Bernie Truax also recorded wins.

51. Jan. 28, 2024: Penn State vs. Maryland, 42-6

Penn State picked up four pins against Terps from Mitchell Mesenbrink, Carter Starocci, Bernie Truax and Greg Kerkvliet. Starocci and Kerkvliet would go on to win NCAA titles that year while Mesenrbrink finished second and Truax finished fifth.

52. Feb. 2, 2024: Penn State vs. Ohio State, 28-9

The headlining match of this dual came at 141 pounds, when Penn State's Beau Bartlett beat Jesse Mendez 4-1 in sudden victory to deliver the Buckeye just his second dual loss of the year. Mendez would get revenge at the Big Ten tournament and in the NCAA finals.

Penn State also notably picked up a win in this dual at 174 pound when NCAA champion Carter Starocci topped Rocco Welsh 4-2. Welsh has since transferred to Penn State and starts for the Nittany Lions at 184 pounds.

53. Feb. 9, 2024: Penn State vs. Iowa, 29-6

Penn State's only losses in this dual came at the hands of eventual NCAA finalist Drake Ayala at 125 pounds and Caleb Rathjen at 149 pounds in sudden victory against Tyler Kasak. The Nittany Lions outscored the Hawks in takedowns 21-5.

54. Feb.12, 2024: Penn State vs. Rutgers, 35-3

The Rutgers win was the 1,000th win in Penn State program history and came in dominant fashion, with the Nittany Lions winning nine of 10 bouts, including two weights with backup athletes. Penn State earned victories from Braeden Davis, Beau Bartlett, Tyler Kasak, Levi Haines, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Terrell Barraclough, Bernie Truax, Aaron Brooks and Lucas Cochran in this Big Ten battle.

55. Feb. 18, 2024: Penn State vs. Nebraska, 22-13

Sixteen of the 20 athletes who competed in this dual either had or have since earned All-American honors in their careers with seven of those 16 winning national titles. Despite the depth and talent across both programs, Penn State reigned with ease, winning six bouts with three by bonus. Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Greg Kerkvliet led the way with a technical fall and two major decisions respectively against NCAA qualifier Bubba Wilson, All-American Silas Allred and NCAA qualifier Nash Hutmacher.

56. Feb. 25, 2024: Penn State vs. Edinboro, 55-0

While Penn State's dominance via four pins, five tech falls and a forfeit stands out from this dual, the bigger headline from the meeting against the Fighting Scots is that this was the dual where then three-time NCAA champion Carter Starocci injured his knee, just two weeks before he would attempt to make history by winning a fourth national title. Starocci did tech his Edinboro opponent Brody Evans in the first period but then forfeited his two Big Ten tournament bouts before gritting his way through NCAAs and capturing top honors at NCAAs, despite the injury.

57. Nov. 17, 2024: Penn State vs. Drexel, 41-3

Two true freshman, Luke Lilledahl and Cael Nasdeo, made their dual debuts for Penn State against the Dragons, though only Nasdeo had the chance to wrestle, as Lilledahl was awarded a forfeit after an injury to Drexel's starter earlier in the week. Nasdeo dropped his match to Jordan Soriano 11-8 for Penn State's lone loss of the dual.

58. Dec. 8, 2024: Penn State vs. Lehigh, 34-3

Three of Lehigh's 10 starters in this dual — Sheldon Seymour, Ryan Crookham and Michael Beard — either had earned or would go on to earn All-American honors. Of the three, only Crookham picked up a W, giving Lehigh its three team points for the night after a 4-1 battle with Penn State's Braeden Davis. Crookham was also the only Mountain Hawk to score a takedown against Penn State, though this would also be Crookham's last varsity dual meet before taking a medical redshirt for the season.

59: Dec. 15, 2024: Penn State vs. Wyoming, 54-0

This win against Wyoming, which included five pins, four techs and a major decision, was Penn State's second-largest margin of victory in history and the second-largest margin of victory in the 77-match win streak. Penn State would tie the program record later in the win streak in a 55-0 win against Michigan State later that season (see No. 63). None of Penn State's individual Cowboy opponents in this dual were ranked higher than 19th.

60. Dec. 22, 2024: Penn State vs. Binghamton, 52-0

Eight of Penn State's 10 matches in this dual ended early. Mitchell Mesenbrink did not wrestle at all, earning a forfeit at 165 pounds, while Shayne Van Ness, Josh Barr and Greg Kerkvliet ended their matches at 149, 197 and 285 pounds in the first period by pin, tech fall and pin. Tyler Kasak and Levi Haines finished their bouts by the end of the second period with a pin and tech fall, respectively, while Luke Lilledahl teched his opponent, Carson Wagner, early in the third period, and Carter Starocci pinned Will Ebert early in the third period as well.

61. Dec. 22, 2024: Penn State vs. Little Rock, 44-0

This win marked Penn State's third straight shutout of the year, and while the score implies yet another dominant win for the Nittany Lions, the individual bouts and the significance of wins at 133 and 197 pounds in particular cannot be overlooked. Braeden Davis' gritty 1-0 win over All-American Nassir Bailey and Josh Barr's 4-1 sudden victory win against All-American Stephen Little showed the "it" factor of those two Penn State underclassman early in the season. Barr would go on to place second at NCAAs while Davis would finish fifth for his first All-American honor.

62. Dec. 22, 2024: Penn State vs. Missouri, 41-3

The big storyline from this dual was Penn State's Levi Haines' bout against Missouri's Keegan O'Toole. The veteran NCAA champion O'Toole earned the win 4-1 in sudden victory to give the Tigers their three points in the dual, but Haines' and O'Toole's talent in that bout generally made it a must-watch event. O'Toole would finish second at NCAAs to Oklahoma State's DJ Hamiti while wrestling on a torn ACL, with Haines taking third.

63. Jan. 10, 2025: Penn State vs. Michigan State, 55-0

Amidst a record-setting stretch for the Nittany Lions, Penn State kept picking up accolades, this time breaking the program standard for most points in a single dual.  Greg Kerkvliet, Luke Lilledahl, Shane Van Ness, Tyler Kasak, Levi Haines, Carter Starocci and Josh Barr earned pins while Braeden Davis, Mitchell Mesenbrink notched techs and Beau Bartlett added a major decision.

64. Jan. 17, 2025: Penn State vs. Nebraska, 31-7

Penn State's only losses in this bout came at 133 pounds and 149 pounds, where Jacob Van Dee (who would go on to earn All-American honors at NCAAs) topped fellow eventual All-American Braeden Davis 14-7 and future NCAA champion Ridge Lovett topped All-American Shayne Van Ness 10-2. Both of those matches were considered upsets at the time. Penn State notched an upset of its own when Luke Lilledahl beat All-American Caleb Smith, but, outside of those three matches, each bout went chalk with the Nittany Lions walking away the dominant victors to kick off the 2025 Big Ten schedule.

65. Jan. 24, 2025: Penn State vs. Rutgers, 35-3

Penn State continued to sell out opposing gyms. Seven days after wrestling in front of a record crowd in Nebraska, Penn State dominated the Scarlet Knights in a sold-out Jersey Mike's Arena. Braeden Davis, Levi Haines, Josh Barr and Greg Kerkvliet all earned wins against Rutgers All-Americans in Dylan Shawver, Jackson Turley, John Poznanski and Yaraslau Slavikouski. Rutgers' Dean Peterson was the only Scarlet Knight to earn team points when he beat Penn State's Luke Lilledahl at 125 pounds.

66. Jan. 31, 2025: Penn State vs. Iowa, 30-8

Another day, another record. The Nittany Lions stormed past Iowa in a sold-out Bryce Jordan Center with the most iconic moment of the dual coming at 157 pounds, when Penn State's Tyler Kasak lifted up then-No. 1 Jacori Teemer and pumped his fist to the crowd, a symbol of his victory and new status as the then-topped ranked athlete in the country.

67. Feb. 7, 2025: Penn State vs. Michigan, 39-0

Penn State did not give up a single takedown in its dominant victory over the Wolverines. The biggest win of the evening came when freshman Josh Barr topped All-American Jacob Cardenas 3-2 in tiebreakers to preserve the shutout. Barr would also outpace Cardenas at NCAAs, finishing second to the Wolverine's fourth place.

68. Feb. 9, 2025: Penn State vs. Maryland, 35-10

For the second time in two days, Penn State rolled to a win over a Big Ten foe by over 24 points without giving up a single takedown. Luke Lilledahl, Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Carter Starocci and Josh Barr all earned techs, with Starocci's coming against eventual All-American Jaxon Smith. The other notable moment from the dual was Maryland's Ethen Miller's injury default win over Tyler Kasak, a win that would give Miller the No. 1 seed at Big Tens, though Kasak would ultimately recover from his injury and outplace Miller at NCAAs.

69. Feb. 14, 2025: Penn State vs. Ohio State, 27-13

While Penn State dominated the Buckeyes, the dual started off in Ohio State's favor, as Brendan McCrone earned a statement pin against Luke Lilledahl. Lilledahl, like many of his teammates mentioned previously, would outplace McCrone at NCAAs. Braeden Davis and Beau Bartlett put Penn State back in the driver's seat in this dual with notable wins over Nic Bouzakis and Jesse Mendez, and the Nittany Lions were rolling from there, losing only two other weights in the dual at 157 and 285 pounds with backups wrestling in place of Tyler Kasak and Greg Kerklivet.

70. Feb. 16, 2025: Penn State vs. Illinois, 29-9

The win against Illinois — which came by way of a DQ win from Starocci, a tech fall from Lilledahl, major decisions from Shayne Van Ness Mitchell Mesenbrink and Barr and decisions from Beau Barlett and Levi Haines — locked up Penn State's 11th Big Ten regular season title.

71. Feb. 21, 2025: Penn State vs. American, 50-3

Penn State picked up five falls and four techs against the Eagles with the team's lone loss coming at 133 pounds when American's Raymond Lopez topped Penn State backup Kyison Garcia 9-7.

72. Nov. 14, 2025: Penn State vs. Oklahoma, 45-0

Penn State kicked off the 2025-26 season with its young roster of six underclassmen and made a statement against the Sooners. Freshman Connor Mirasola's top-10 win against DJ Parker 13-3 served as the headline of the dual and highlighted Penn State's depth at 197 pounds where the Nittany Lions also have NCAA finalist Josh Barr in the room.

73. Dec. 5, 2025: Penn State vs. Drexel, 43-4

Penn State brought the heat to Philly, helping the Drexel Dragons sell out the Daskalaskis Athletic Center before demolishing them in nine of 10 bouts. Drexel's only win came at 141 when Jordan Soriano beat Penn State's Cael Nasdeo. Penn State also has Aaron Nagao as an option at 141, and is expected to slot in for Nasdeo.

74. Dec. 7, 2025: Penn State vs. Lehigh, 36-6

In what has become a fun, in-state December dual, Penn State once again stormed past the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh was notably without All-Americans Sheldon Seymour, Ryan Crookham and Luke Stanich, but PJ Duke and Mitchell Mesenbrink did pick up top-10 wins by major decision and injury default, respectively.

75. Dec. 13, 2025: Penn State vs. Wyoming, 40-7

Altitude didn't hold Penn State back as the Nittany Lions crushed the Cowboys with four pins and 20 total takedowns. The dual drew a record 4,686 fans to Wyoming's home gym.

76. Dec. 20, 2025: Penn State vs. North Dakota State, 46-0

Penn State picked up its second shutout of the year and its fourth win with over 40 points against the Bison. North Dakota State brought four ranked wrestlers to the mat, but Penn State topped them all. PJ Duke earned the highest ranked win of the day as he continued to inch his way to ladder of the 157-pound standings; his major decision against Gavin Drexler 16-5 gives him a nice statement for his resume.
