No. 5 Houston drops third straight in loss to No. 14 Kansas

Final buzzer bench reactions from last 20 years of March Madness

The No. 5 Houston Cougars suffered their worst loss of the season Monday night, falling 69-56 to No. 14 Kansas.

After climbing as high as No. 1 in the AP rankings earlier this year, Houston now finds itself on a three-game losing streak, its longest skid in nine seasons.

While Kansas had lost two of its last three entering Monday night, the Jayhawks looked sharp from the opening tip.

Senior shooting guard Tre White led Kansas with 23 points on 66.7% shooting from the field and 75% from three, adding five rebounds.

Projected top-three pick Darryn Peterson finished as Kansas’ second-leading scorer with 14 points, adding four rebounds and an assist.

The Jayhawks shot efficiently from beyond the arc, knocking down seven three-pointers at a 41 percent clip.

While four of their five starters scored in double figures, Kansas controlled the game on the defensive end, holding Houston to just 32 percent shooting from the field and 21 percent from three-point range.

Kingston Flemings was the only Houston player to reach double figures, scoring 16 points while shooting just 33.3 percent from the field.

The loss leaves Houston tied with Kansas for second place in the Big 12 at 11–4, trailing Arizona.

Next, Houston hosts Colorado at the Fertitta Center on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. ET. Kansas will travel to face Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. ET at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona.
