๐Ÿ˜ˆ Arizona State wins Game 2, advances to Ice Breaker championship

No. 15 Arizona State outlasts Notre Dame in Game 2 of the Ice Breaker, winning 5-3 and advancing to face Alaska in the Ice Breaker championship game. Itโ€™s ASUโ€™s first win of the season.

Game 2 was an offensive explosion, with the two teams combining for over 85 shots on goal. Arizona State opened the scoring with two quick goals late in the first period, the first from captain Kyle Smolen and the second from Noah Powell, his first as a Sun Devil.

The Sun Devils came out in the second period and picked up where they left off in the first, scoring just 53 seconds into the period on Carmelo Crandellโ€™s first collegiate goal off of a beauty of a saucer pass.

But Notre Dameโ€™s offense eventually woke up, scoring back-to-back tallies on long-range point shots from Henry Nelson and Paul Fischer.

Then Arizona Stateโ€™s Benjamin Kevan joined the party, scoring consecutive highlight-reel goals, his first two collegiate goals. The first was a wicked shot from the high slot that went top shelf. The second came on the breakaway, where he made no mistake and roofed it,

Arizona State goaltender Samuel Urban made 36 saves on 38 shots in his NCAA debut before leaving the game with cramps. Carter Hasley came in in relief, allowing one goal on 12 shots he faced.

ASU moves on to face Alaska in the Ice Breaker championship game Saturday night at 10 p.m. ET. Notre Dame will play No. 8 Quinnipiac in the third-place game at 6 p.m.

โ˜€๏ธ Sun Devils up 3 after 40 minutes | ASU 5, ND 2

If you like goals, then you've come to the right place. ASU and Notre Dame exploded for five goals in the second period. ASU opened the period with a gorgeous saucer pass and five-hole finish for Carmelo Crandell's first collegiate goal.

But Notre Dame answered right back with a pair of goals, as Henry Nelson and Paul Fischer each found the twine from the point.

Just when it felt like Notre Dame had all the momentum, ASU Freshman Benjamin Kevan stole it all back, scoring his first two collegiate goals in highlight-reel fashion.

Notre Dame leads in shots, 30-28, but the Irish are struggling to generate high-danger scoring chances so far in this one. Third-period action is coming right up in what is sure to be an exciting finish to Game 2 of the Ice Breaker.

๐Ÿซจ ASU leads after a WILD first period | ASU 2, ND 0

After a slow start for both teams, things really picked up late in the first period. Notre Dame's penalty kill started strong with back-to-back kills, but a major penalty and game misconduct to William Belle gave ASU a third, extended powerplay, and the Sun Devils capitalized for the game's first goal from Kyle Smolen.

They wasted no time getting the next goal, as Noah Powell picked a corner for his first as a Sun Devil. Then just minutes later, it looked like ASU would take a 3-0 lead as they hammered home a loose puck in the crease, but the referee called no-goal since the play was blown dead before the goal as the ref lost sight of it.

Arizona State leads in the shot department, 15-12 after the first 20 minutes.
